Create: Black Out Poems

Hey there Mermaid! I often hear from people that they aren’t artistic or can only draw stick people. Well, Posy and I are here to show you that there are easy projects that you can do right meow!

All you need is:

  1. An old book you don’t mind ripping out a page (a magazine or newspaper will do fine too!)
  2. Sharpie
  3. Workspace

The most important element for making blackout poetry is text. Flip through your pages and find one that has words that jump out at you. For instance: love, life, some silly words, etc. I decided to read my page and it was about this man who was a crook for selling bad wine, so I decided to make it a happier story (hmm…I just realized I called this blog post about making poems, well, stories are poems too!).

If you choose a word then continue looking for other words that will evoke an emotion or tell a story. Get creative! Listen to music that will help inspire your feelings into your black out poem.

Tip: I like to outline my words with a thicker line so when I begin surrounding it with my black sharpie I don’t accidentally fill in the box. Feel free to use other colors too!

Voila! You, kind sir or lady, have made yourself some pretty cool looking art. And it was easy-peasy!

Now I am off to come up with more black out poems that are a bit more creative in the approach on how to black it out. I will share it with you later. Until then, have a great day!

Peace + love, Jaclyn
