Hello mermaids! You ready for another party post?!! If so, then keep on reading.
About a month and a half ago, our friend Kim asked us if we’d be willing to go in on a Surprise Pirate themed Birthday for her boyfriend/our bestie, Abram’s 30th Birthday. We were like, “Yes!” After we threw out a few ideas we came up with a game plan: to take Abram on a Pirate Treasure Hunt through downtown Wichita. Sound crazy? Oh, but it was. lol. Another crazy thing is that we did all of this in a very short two weeks. But it was well worth it in the end. :)
The hardest part wasn’t the lying to Abram about where we were when we secretly met (he’s apparently as gullible as I am), the hardest part for me was thinking he would think we didn’t want to hang out. At least it wasn’t for too long that we had to secretly meet without him. We met the first morning at Good Egg to start the planning. This is where we found out that Travis wanted to go all out with the clues. He ended up writing 30 different clues, each rhyming and all of them telling a story of Captain Blackheart, his ship, and the quest for finding the treasure! It’s a pretty bad ass story. Great job Travis!
Below are some photos from my phone whenever we would meet up. We walked around the Keeper and the river to find areas to have clues for Abram and Kim to go to. One of the neatest clues Travis came up with was to use the Troll, speakers and a recorded Travis/Troll voice to give Abram his next clue! What to the what?!! So good and we totally pulled it off. (fun fact: the troll was made by my friend Karen’s Aunt and Karen got to work on it before it was put on display!). There are so many clue ideas, but I’ll tell you more of them later in the post. I know you want to see the photos!
Morning of the treasure hunt: we were all pretty exhausted from all the work we put in and the fact that we had a “decoy” party the night before to throw Abram off our surprise even more. Needless to say, we stayed late and got very little sleep. lol. But our giddiness kept us pumped as we gathered at our apartment to begin the day!
I borrowed a telephoto lens from a photographer friend and Chelsea and I got to fulfill our dreams of being spies/stalkers. :) We sat huddled under some bushes waiting for Abram and Kim to arrive and I started snapping. (sidenote: our goal was to not be seen so it would be another surprise for Abram to get the photos here on the blog, but more on that later).
At the Keeper to get a few of his clues.
Looking back on these photos I feel like I was such a creep. ha! At one point, Chelsea and I were hunkered down under a war memorial when this random guy saw us, saw that we were taking photos of Abram + Kim and started taking photos of us with his phone! He probably thought we were stalkers and something was about to go down. lol. Because it was so dang windy that morning we couldn’t yell over to him to let him know all was ok, so we just smiled and gave him the thumbs up.
The Troll clue was so cool! Travis recorded his voice, made it sound like a troll and added cave drip sounds to make it even more awesome. (don’t worry, after they got the clue Chelsea picked up the speaker and phone to put in her car).
We lost A+K for a minute or two (oops), but when we spotted them we didn’t want them to see us and hit the ground. ha!
The clues then lead him to 2nd street and into downtown. This was where it got tricky for Chelsea and I to hide. We darted behind buildings, stayed way back, and tried to blend in with our surroundings. Again…more on that in just a second. :)
One of the clues led A+K to the YMCA where our friend, Ben, just “happened” to be there. Naw, he had the next clue! They walked a block over and back down to 2nd street where Chelsea and I had walked down an alley so they could walk past us and we would be behind them again. Well…mother nature stepped in and when Abram opened one of his clues, it blew away from him…and down the alley that Chelsea and I were at! Oyi!
Chelsea darted behind this trash can giggling, and I hid behind a tree and took her photo while giggling too. I’m pretty certain Abram saw/heard us, but he’s a good sport and acted like he didn’t. Thanks Abram!
While they continued getting clues, Chels and I ran around some buildings to the second floor of the parking garage where the rest of our friends and Abram’s mom and sister were. Ready for him! I also got in position to capture more photos from above.
In Old Town where the second to last clue was in the center of the square leading him to the parking garage.
The final clue was for Abram to arm himself with a Nerf gun as we all ran out from behind the wall with Nerf darts attacking him!
Abram trying to attack everyone…
…and then collapsed from laughter.
Travis getting one final shot at the birthday boy!
It’s not over yet Abram! We all pitched in to get you a tablet for you to make some digital art. :)
Oh, and if that weren’t enough awesomeness for one person, we had a party waiting back at the apartment for him.
The decorations were very piraty.
Abram made me this necklace for our Pathfinder Pirate Adventuring Party (yup, we love pirates and nerdy fun things).
He also made this black skull for T’s character in our Pathfinder Party.
Travis put together this awesome treasure chest with gold coins, necklaces, and of course, the gift itself.
Can’t have a party without a piñata of course!
Chelsea made this amazing birthday card!
Abram taking it all in.
Pirate ship racing game (Jamaica)! What can I say? We LOVE anything piraty!
Went outside to knock out the piñata where we ended up kicking it to pieces.
Some of the amazing clues. The first clue was an Easter like clue (it was Easter that we did this treasure hunt on), that lead him to his freezer, then to his car where he found the map, then to the Keeper…and you know the rest since you just looked at all the photos. :)
Some clues had wax sealing them, some were photo clues.
This one was pretty epic. A vial of “blood” to reveal the hidden message.
The second to last clue (from the center of Old Town) was this tracing paper leading him to go West towards the parking garage.
Whew! What a long post. Thanks for making it this far! I had such a fun time helping out making this party a success. It wouldn’t of happened without a few people:
Travis for writing all of the clues and making them look bad ass.
Chelsea for the piñata, the card, and walking thru the trail with us, as well as putting up with Travis’ rhymes for days. hehe.
Caitlin for making the bundt cake, walking thru the trail with us the day before to make sure each clue made sense.
Kim for being an awesome girlfriend and wanting to do this for Abram, keeping out secret meetings a secret, and being with him on the actual treasure hunt. I hope it was as much fun as it was for Abram.
Ben, for meeting A+K at the YMCA to give him a clue and finish out the last part of the treasure hunt.
And to T, all our friends and Abram’s family who came to shower Abram with Nerf darts and love. You guys rock!
And of course, Abram. Thanks for being our friend and always willing to do crazy things with us. You are awesome and Happy 30th Birthday!! I’m sorry the rest of your birthday’s won’t be an elaborate piarte treasure hunt like this one. lol.
Thank you everyone again.
Peace + love, Jaclyn
